Women’s World Cup 2023 schedule
This Women’s World Cup marks the first time with an expanded 32-team field, and it includes eight teams making their World Cup debut: Haiti, the Republic of Ireland, Morocco, Panama, Philippines, Portugal, Vietnam, and Zambia will all be competing in the Women’s World Cup for the first time.
Australia is considered one of the favorites, but they face a tough challenge in Group B, which is often referred to as this year’s “Group of Death.” They will have to face strong opponents like Canada, Ireland, and Nigeria to advance. Adding to their difficulties, Australia received bad news at the start of the tournament when their top scorer, Sam Kerr, suffered a calf injury during training and will miss at least the first two matches.
England is another top contender, but they are dealing with several key players' injuries. Leah Williamson and Fran Kirby are both sidelined with knee injuries, along with Beth Mead, who won the Golden Boot at the 2022 Euros.
Group F promises to be exciting with the presence of France and Brazil. Marta is participating in her final World Cup, and the two teams had a memorable match in the Round of 16 in 2019, with France prevailing 2-1.
The United States is widely considered the overall favorites
for the tournament, but they are going through a period of transition. The
USWMT is also missing some crucial players due to injuries, including Mallory
Swanson, Becky Sauerbrunn, Catarina Macario, Sam Mewis, and Christen Press.
This has opened up opportunities for emerging talents like Sophia Smith and
Trinity Rodman, who will join established stars such as Julie Ertz, Rose
Lavelle, and Alex Morgan in their quest to send Megan Rapinoe off as a winner
in her final World Cup
